I just received this from Amazon, at a sale price, so I thought I would clarify what Amazon is selling here. This is the Kidde model number number KN-COPP-B, which is shared by several "assembly numbers" of which this is 900-0089. I think that is what's in the fine print in the photo of the back, but it's hard to read. There are slight cosmetic differences between the pictures and what I received, but less than with other Amazon listings of COPP-B with other assembly numbers.
The important thing is that, although this assembly number has been in use for many years (Google it), the guts of this are the newer technology with the seven year lifespan and death chirp alert, according to what's printed on the case. The case has a handy little summary of what to do for various ranges of alarm readings, so you don't call 911 for minor things, and since you'll never find the manual, which you can read at [...] , albeit for another COPP-B assembly number.

Rechargeable Batteries by Energizer? - AA - Pack of 4 Review

Rechargeable Batteries by Energizer? - AA - Pack of 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am using rechargeable batteries most of my life (am from overseas), so I will do even over here where most is wasted.
My 10 year old rechargeable batteries finally died, I bought Duracell ones first, they lasted 3 months, got replacements from factory, lasted less then 6 months.
Then switched to Energizer ones. They seem to work fine. Don't have the full capacity as advertised but close (not 2,450 mAh, rather 2,122 mAh).
Tried to format them with my computer charger (a computerized charger, not one of the cheap ones you can buy at every store), showed only minor improvement. Still, they work fine, and thus being NiMH's (no memory effect), I always completely discharge them before charging. So let's see how long they will last.

GE Simon 3 Wireless Security System Review

GE Simon 3 Wireless Security System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well worth the money for the system and can be monitored by yourself for no monthly fee. I bought this system about 1 year ago for my apartment. The instructions leave a lot to be desired. That is why I gave it a 4 star. Written in Engineerese--- YOU have to figure out what they were telling you. Find someone that's set up one before so you don't wind up pulling out all your hair. If I had to install the same system in my place again, I could probably manage it in under an hour ( I have 5 sensors ). I bought a Tracfone with a one year subscription for about $100. and programmed the system to call me silently. Saves me from having to pay monitor fees and since it is silent, I can respond within just a few minutes and see who has walked into my place or opened a window. Well worth the money for the peace of mind. Hope this helps someone looking for a home security system.

ProTech 7035 Lithium Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Detector with Digital Display and Memory Review

ProTech 7035 Lithium Battery Powered Carbon Monoxide Detector with Digital Display and Memory

Most CO detectors are essentially idiot lights in that they are either in stand by, or in alarm mode. This unit provides a digital readout of current CO level in parts per million, the highest CO reading and the duration of highest reading, since it was last cleared. It is a must for those of us who heat with non-vented catalytic heaters. (in our motorhome) This unit could provide early warning of a failing heating system before inhabitants begin to be affected by CO poisoning. The best CO detector I've found.

First Alert SA305CN Smoke Alarm with Long Life Lithium Battery Review

First Alert SA305CN Smoke Alarm with Long Life Lithium Battery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought 2 of these alarms to replace a couple other alarms in my home as they were about 15 yrs. old & thought it might be wise to "update". The long-life lithium batteries was a real selling pont to me. The one thing that concerns me about these new detectors is that aren't nearly as sensitive as my old detectors were. My wife ocassionally burns things while cooking, or gets the oven too hot. My old detectors would "go off" when this happened. These new ones have not signalled when this happens but the old ones still do. I tested the new ones by heating an iron skillet on the stove with a bit of grease in it. LOTS of smoke bellowed out, the old detectors sounded immediately but it took a couple minutes longer and a lot more smoke for the new ones to finally signal. Hope this isn't over-reaction on my behalf but I sort of like the sensitivity level of the older detectors compared to the new ones.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%, and that's important because a home fire starts every 83 seconds! The faster you know about a fire, the faster you can start moving your family outside. The First Alert smoke alarm with lithium battery gives you the peace of mind of a 10-year battery life warranty. It uses ionization smoke sensing technology with a new contemporary enhanced smoke gathering design. It features a low battery alert to remind you when to change the battery and has a missing battery guard to ensure that a battery is placed inside the alarm. The side battery drawer slides open for easy battery replacement. A blinking power indicator on the unit confirms that it is receiving power. The silence/test button allows you to both silence a non-threatening alarm and to test the unit's functionality. The alarm contains an optional pin to lock the battery and unit in place for tamper resistance. It can be mounted on either the ceiling or the wall and can be used in mobile homes and RVs. It includes one 9-volt lithium power cell with 10-year battery life warranty. 10-year limited warranty on alarm unit. UL listed for safety. Approved for sale in Oregon.--Bree Norlander

Kidde KN-COSM-XTR-B Intelligent Alarm, Combination Carbon Monoxide, Fire and Smoke Review

Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm with Talking Alarm (Tools & Hardware)
I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free.
What attracted me to this model were its many features:
First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.
Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future.
We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably. Notably, recent studies have shown that children can sleep through traditional smoke detector alarms, but will respond to voice warnings -- which this unit provides. Thus, placed in or near bedrooms this device can be a true lifesaver.
Another favorite feature is ease of installation. It was a breeze and truly could not be simpler. A screwriver is all you need. A small power drill/driver would speed the process, but is not necessary. Two screws into the ceiling or wall and you are done with the mounting bracket. The detector then just clicks in to place with a clockwise flick of the wrist. This is a do-it-yourselfer's dream. It doesn't get any easier!
Battery maintenance is easy too as all you need do is turn the detector counter-clock wise a few clicks, and down it comes. You slide open the battery cover, take out the old batteries and pop in the new. Replace the detector back in the attached ceiling bracket, give it a slight turn and in it goes with a firm click. Done! Easier than screwing in a light bulb.
Finally, the price is right! Under $40 for a unique life-safety device that is quickly installed and easily maintained.
I have elected to use Energizer lithium batteries and replace them every 12 months -- with no problems. You may wish to change the batteries every 6 or 9 months. Duracells would also be a good choice. I personally would not use the cheaper, so called "heavy duty" batteries in a life-safety device.
I should add that I would also suggest that if you have a home with multiple levels or an apartment with several rooms, having a separate stand-alone carbon monoxide detector elsewhere in the house as part of a total home plan would be a wise investment. Kidde also makes a fine combination model that protects against Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas. That unit, which has a digital display, runs on electricity and has a battery back-up system. It plugs in any electric outlet and can stay in the wall socket, or it can be placed flat on a table or dresser.
I would also recommend Kidde's dedicated dual sensor photoelectric/ionization smoke detectors. These dual sensor devices provide maximum warning under fast or slow moving fire conditions. As one never knows what kind of fire could occur, these are the most versatile.
Be sure to test your alarm regularly. REMEMBER that most carbon monoxide detectors NEED TO BE REPLACED about every five to seven years (see manufacturer's guidelines). Similarly, smoke detectors have a useable life span as well. It's usually a little longer than carbon monoxide detectors -- check your manufacturer's guidelines.
